Construction Industry Sees Growth in Number of Employment Openings

If you’re contemplating a career in construction, now is a perfect time to explore the industry. The construction industry’s employment outlook is looking promising as the number of jobs within the sector continues to rise. The month of September saw an increase of 23K jobs, while employment trends have steadily increased throughout the year.

“Construction employment continued to trend up in September (+23,000). Employment in heavy and civil engineering construction and in specialty trade contractors also continued to trend up (+7,000 and +16,000, respectively),” according to an Oct. 5 report from the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), via (https://bit.ly/2jclAPE).

Twenty-nine states and the District of Columbia have seen construction employment openings rise between August and September. In the same regard, 45 states and the District of Columbia added openings between September of 2017 and September 2018. This information comes from an analysis produced by the Associated General Contractors of America (AGC).

“Construction activity is expanding nearly everywhere, as only three states experienced a decline in construction employment over the past year,” said chief economist Ken Simonson. “These results show that contractors remain upbeat about demand for projects going forward. However, further employment gains may be difficult, given low unemployment in most states and an inadequate pipeline for training future construction workers,” via (https://bit.ly/2NX9GbD).

According to the same analysis, the state of Florida has seen the largest construction employment growth with nearly 71K jobs added throughout the past year. With 3,700 new construction jobs, Pennsylvania has seen the largest number of one-month openings between August and September. Five states saw a record high number of construction openings, including Colorado, Massachusetts, New York, Oregon and Texas.

While construction employment openings are rising in the majority of states throughout the United States, three states saw a decline between September 2017 and September 2018. These include New Jersey, Kentucky and Missouri. Two states did not see changes. Between August and September of this year, 17 states saw a decrease in construction employment.
